The First Day

Who will I meet?

Everyone! You’ll be welcomed into the HI family on your first day. You’ll meet with your supervisor, who will go through some paperwork including tax forms and the employee handbook. Make sure you bring your SIN card and any relevant banking information so you can fill out tax forms and direct deposit information.

You’ll get a copy of your Letter of Employment and you’ll have time to read through the Employee Handbook, which explains everything you need to know (well, almost!) about working at HI. You’ll get plenty of time to ask questions and take in your new work environment.

Is there any type of safety orientation?

We want you to be safe, so we’ll take you on a tour of the hostel, highlighting safety exits and give instructions on what to do in case of emergency. We’ll also go through a brief safety orientation with various topics dependent on your position...

A safe working environment is a happy one!

How do I know what to do?

Don’t worry - we’ll be there with you every step of the way. You’ll have your own special training program depending on what you’re doing and where you’re doing it and we’ll make sure you know the ins and outs of the job and give you a lot of practice with lots of back-up on hand if you need it.

Will I get to talk with and meet people from other hostels?

That’s one of the perks about the HI-Network! You’ll probably be meeting a lot of people over the phone and via e-mail in the first few weeks, but there’s also chances for in person meetings. We sponsor familiarization tours so you get a chance to visit other hostels, but we also have events and training sessions that involve more than one hostel.
